The Percentage of Zambians classified as living in poverty declined from 60.5% in 2010 to 50.4% in 2015.

The Zambian Central Statistics Office (CSO) released the mid-survey in Lusaka.

Agency Director John Kalumbi said in a speech to reporters in capital, Lusaka on Sunday.

Kalumbi stated that there were still certain districts in Luapula and Western Provinces that recorded high poverty levels, but insisted that the national average statics on poverty levels  showed that poeple classified as living in poverty had steadily declined.

Zambia is one of the fastest growing economies in the World and has been posting economic growth rate of up-to 7% in the last 10 years.

It also has a growing middle class and the major cities have shopping malls, and housing estates to cater for consumptive habits of this class.

However extreme poverty remains prevalent in the rural areas with some districts in Luapula and Western provinces recording high poverty levels.

To tackle the scourge of  extreme poverty  and hunger, government has introduced a safety net program: the Social-Cash-Transfer Scheme that benefits the aged , disabled and extreme poor.

This scheme has been introduced and expanded to cover certain districts in five provinces.

Government also spends huge amounts of money on subsidies on farmer in-put support programs to peasant farmers in rural areas.

It also has a running program to deliver free maize to hunger stricken areas through its Disaster Mitigating& Management Unit (DMMU).

To address the economic headwinds that has affected the country's national currency, energy deficiencies, and regional maize shortage, the governemnt recently re-introduced subsidies, it can barely afford, on fuel and energy.

The statics office conducted a 10 year survey in 2010. This is a mid five year review.
